The rapid proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystems across industries has led to increasing heterogeneity in devices, communication protocols, and data models. Ensuring secure and interoperable communication across such diverse environments remains a major research challenge. This paper proposes a cloud-native middleware framework designed to address security, scalability, and interoperability in heterogeneous IoT systems. Leveraging containerization, microservices, and zero-trust principles, the middleware aims to simplify integration while ensuring compliance with modern cybersecurity standards. By contextualizing current challenges within research and identifying critical gaps, this work highlights the importance of cloud-native middleware in enabling sustainable and secure IoT infrastructures.
